Michter’s US-1 Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash 2025 ReleaseSour Mash Whiskey | 43% ABV (86 Proof) | 750 mL | Kentucky, USA | Limited Release
Process & Profile
This 2025 release of the Michter’s US-1 Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash marks the third overall bottling of this unique expression, first introduced in 2019. The whiskey begins as Michter’s US-1 Sour Mash—a distillate matured in new charred American oak barrels—then undergoes a secondary finishing period in custom-made toasted (but un-charred) oak barrels made from staves that were air-dried for at least 18 months. The toasting process is designed to accentuate richer nuances of honey, spice, citrus, and smoky butter-pecan in the final product. The whiskey is bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof).
Tasting Notes
Nose: Gentle camp-fire smoke leading into honeyed vanilla, warm baked apples and subtle citrus peel.
Palate: Smooth and layered with butter-pecan sweetness, toasted oak spice, dried cherries and a whisper of orange zest.
Finish: Softly warming with lingering notes of toasted wood, honeyed cereal and light baking spice.
What Makes It Special
The secondary maturation in toasted but un-charred barrels—a technique pioneered by Michter’s—clearly differentiates this release from standard bourbon and rye offerings.
It revives a rare whiskey category: sour mash, neither bourbon nor rye, but a homage to Michter’s Pennsylvania roots.
Bottled at the more moderate proof of 43% ABV (86 proof), making this limited-edition whiskey more accessible for contemplative sipping than many high-proof releases.
A limited-release collector bottling—the 2025 edition followed the prior 2019 and 2022 releases, underscoring its rarity.
From one of America’s most respected craft whiskey producers, the 2025 release further elevates Michter’s reputation for innovation and creativity.
How to Enjoy
Serve neat or with a single large ice cube in a Glencairn or rocks glass to appreciate the subtle toasted barrel influence and layered sweetness. Because of its structure and approachable proof, this expression is ideal for thoughtful sipping and discussion—perfect for whiskey tastings or collector flights. Avoid heavy mixing to let the nuanced finish shine through.
