Hand-crafted in the sun-drenched valley of San Luis del Río, Oaxaca, this special expression was specifically designed by Single Village Mezcal pioneer Del Maguey to honor the sacred traditions of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) while providing an elevated, proof-adjusted single-village mezcal tailored for premium cocktails and neat sipping alike.
Available now at World of Whiskey Shop, Del Maguey Vida de Muertos is hand-crafted from 100% mature Espadín agave (Agave angustifolia). Following centuries-old Zapotec methods, the agave hearts (piñas) are roasted underground in conical earthen pits over wood fires, ground using a horse-drawn stone tahona mill, naturally fermented in open-air wooden vats with wild ambient yeasts, and twice-distilled in small copper craft stills. Bottled at a higher strength than standard Vida, it provides an incredible aromatic concentration and structured mouthfeel that holds up brilliantly in complex cocktails.
In the glass, it pours crystal clear with luminous silver brightness. The nose opens with an inviting bouquet of delicate wood smoke, floral honeysuckle, and sweet roasted agave, underlaid by notes of citrus peel, tropical papaya, and fresh green herbs. On the palate, a lush, velvety, full-bodied texture unleashes expressive flavors of sweet agave nectar, white pepper, creamy vanilla, and ripe stone fruit, balanced by subtle mineral complexity and gentle campfire smoke. Bottled at 45% ABV (90 Proof), the finish is remarkably long, warm, and smooth, leaving lingering notes of herbal spice, citrus zest, and soft smoky oak.
