The Casillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva is one of the world’s most recognizable Chilean red wines. Now available at worldofwhiskeyshop.com, this benchmark bottle is famous not just for its rich flavor profile, but also for its legendary origin story.
The Legend of the Devil’s Cellar
More than a century ago, the winery’s founder, Don Melchor de Concha y Toro, noticed that his finest private reserve wines were disappearing from his cellar. To keep intruders away, he spread a rumor that the Devil itself lived deep within the cellar vaults. The rumor spread quickly, the thefts stopped, and the legendary Casillero del Diablo (“Cellar of the Devil”) was born.
Vineyard and Terroir
This wine hails from Chile’s celebrated Valle Central (Central Valley). This region features a Mediterranean climate characterized by sun-drenched days and cooling night breezes rolling off the Andes Mountains. This unique climate, paired with alluvial and rocky soils, creates an environment for growing Cabernet Sauvignon grapes with deep color, balanced acidity, and concentrated dark fruit flavors.
